Gingivitis and Periodontitis<\/h1>\n

What is gingivitis and what is periodontitis?<\/h3>\n

We use the term gingivitis to describe chronic gum infection and the term periodontitis to refer to inflammation that has progressed to the deeper tissues, that is, to the bone surrounding the tooth.<\/p>\n

What are the causes of gingivitis and periodontitis?<\/h3>\n

The main cause of both is the dental microbial plaque which in combination with the response of our immune system causes the destruction of periodontal tissues. Aggravating factors in the progression of the disease include smoking, diabetes and diseases of the immune system.<\/p>\n

What are the symptoms?<\/h3>\n

Early symptoms are redness of the gums, bleeding during brushing, and slight mobility and \/ or tooth displacement.<\/p>\n

What is the prevention for gingivitis?<\/h3>\n

The best prevention for gingivitis and therefore periodontitis is the semi-annual teeth cleaning. Visiting our dentist once a semester and conducting a clinical examination and thorough cleaning prevents the formation of plaque, caries and therefore we are protected from gingivitis and periodontitis.<\/p>\n

How is it treated?<\/h3>\n

Once the disease has appeared, a visit to the dentist for the implementation of comprehensive periodontal treatment, including plaque removal with ultrasound and scaling with hand tools, depending on the stage of the disease, is imperative. Gingivitis is treated at a one hour appointment while periodontitis treatment usually requires two appointments of a similar duration. In both cases, a patient review is required at individual intervals.<\/p>\n
